COVID-19: the head of the Spanish Government Pedro Sánchez, in quarantine due to contact with Emmanuel Macron

The President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sánchez has announced that he will remain in quarantine until December 24, “complying with the protocols” for monitoring the COVID-19 contacts.

Sánchez was in Paris last Monday to commemorate 60 years of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the OECD. There he was warmly received and patted on the back by French President Emmanuel Macron at the gates of the Elysee Palace.

Macron tested positive for COVID-19 this morning, after presenting symptoms, so last Monday it was in the middle of the incubation period, which is estimated to vary between four and 15 days.

Last Monday the French president organized a meal that was attended, in addition to Pedro Sánchez, by the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Council Charles Michel, and the secretary general of the OECD.

Elíseo assures that Macron observed the safety regulations, but meals are by nature one of the activities with the highest risk of contagion since masks are not worn.

The Secretary General of the OECD Ángel Gurría has also wished Emannuel Macron a speedy recovery and has announced that he will be quarantined.

Also the first Portuguese minister Antonio Costa said that he has been quarantined until the health authorities assess the degree of risk. Costa held a working lunch with Macron on Wednesday, the day before declaring himself positive.

For their part, Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, on social networks, have limited themselves to giving the French president a speedy recovery.

Dear @EmmanuelMacron, I wish you a speedy recovery. I am wholeheartedly with you. This pandemic, we are going to defeat it together. We will continue to work together to vaccinate and protect our citizens.

Charles Michel has made it known that he is going to isolate himself as a precautionary measure.

Only the president of the European Commission von der Leyen would have decided to dispense with this precautionary measure based on the considerations of the Elysee Palace, which estimates that last Monday’s meal does not pose a risk because it was carried out with all the precautionary measures.

At the national level, Macron’s positive has also had a domino effect in the Government, with the first minister in quarantine for a week and in the president’s family, with Macron’s wife, Brigitte, also in quarantine for at least a week . None of them show symptoms.

In recent days, Emmanuel Macron has had, as usual, a busy schedule with multiple contacts at the national level.

A large part of them have not considered it necessary to isolate themselves as prevention measures have been respected.
